Chapter Five
“That’s not true,” she sneered, taking another sip of her coffee.
“Yes, it is.”
Having discovered that they worked only a short distance from each other in the city, the couple had made plans to meet up for lunch. They sat at a table together in a corner of the small, busy cafe.
Between the journey to get there and ordering once they did, the hour they had available to spend together passed more quickly than either of them would have liked. She was unable to resist being in his company and she was sure he felt the same. Despite this, their time was mostly spent mocking each other’s choice of keep-fit regime and claiming to have the most stamina. Finally, they agreed to put the argument to rest by going to the gym together that evening, settling it before moving on to another debate.
“Your nickname is Stones?” she asked, remaining doubtful despite his words sounding genuine.
He nodded, amused by her look of disbelief.
“And is that because of the reason that I think?”
“What reason is that?”
She paused, well aware that he knew exactly what she was talking about and just wanted to hear her say it. Despite them already sitting close to each other, she leant into him before speaking. “Because of the size of your junk?”
His only reply was a broad smile, his eyes flashing mischievously.
“And the people you train with call you Stones?”
“Yep. Sticks and Stones.”
“Do you men really boast about that stuff?”
“I didn’t say I boast.”
“Well, how do they know?”
“It’s a man thing.”
She shook her head before finishing off the last bite of her lunch.
“Anyway, enough of you calling me a liar, I only brought it up so I could let you know that I’ll be quite busy over the next week or so.”
“Really? Why?”
She did her best impression of someone asking a casual question, hopeful of hiding the sudden suspicion that she felt.
“I’m training for an MMA match,” he replied simply, finishing his coffee before looking at his watch. “Let’s go, I don’t want you to get back to work late.”
Feeling that she was supposed to know what he was talking about, she automatically followed his lead and put on her coat. Her mind was occupied with trying different variations of the acronym, but none seemed right and that only helped to fuel her negative thoughts.
As they walked out together, Remy was still trying to figure it out and took his arm as if it was routine for the couple. Though it remained fairly cold, it didn’t bother her as much as it usually did. They only got a few steps away from the cafe before curiosity got the better of her, winning out over the fear of sounding as if she was asking a stupid question.
“What does MMA stand for?”
“Mixed martial arts,” he replied, showing no indication he thought the question a stupid one.
She was vaguely aware of the type of thing he was talking about, making her picture him within the confines of a cage the size of a boxing ring, fighting until someone was unconscious or bleeding.
